Taptic is a mobile app that detects everyday sounds—like fire alarms, doorbells, and baby cries—and alerts Deaf and Hard of Hearing users through vibrations, flashlight, and push notifications. It turns any smartphone into a portable accessibility device, offering safety and independence without the cost of IoT hardware or retrofitting homes.
We operate on a freemium model: emergency sounds (sirens, alarms) are always free, while full sound access is available for $5/month. Taptic already has active paid subscribers on both monthly and yearly plans. With 2,800+ iOS users in under 8 months, 87% 3-month retention, and a 5.98% conversion rate, we received over 100K impressions and an Android waitlist of 350+ users.
We’ve completed 47 app iterations informed by 350+ ASL customer interviews. Taptic is currently piloted in 3 Deaf schools, supported by 5 Deaf organizations, and has been showcased at the three largest Deaf expos in the U.S. The Foundation for Hearing and Speech Resources endorses Taptic as "disruptive accessibility technology."
In a market of 466 million Deaf and Hard of Hearing people globally (including 48 million in the U.S.), most solutions are expensive, stationary, and detect only one type of sound. Taptic is the only real-time, portable solution. No wifi needed. Connect to Bluetooth devices like Apple Watches to extend the alert range.
