A Repurposed Place

The Mill was originally built in 1915 as part of the Showers Brothers Furniture Factory. Founded in 1868 by Charles C. Showers, the company was a driving influence on Bloomington history until 1955 when it was sold to Storkline. At its peak in the 1920s, it produced 700,000 pieces of furniture a year. In recent years, it was used as a storage facility by Indiana University, and in 2011, the City of Bloomington purchased it, along with several other parcels of land. These 12 acres are now for the Trades District, a certified technology park of which The Mill is the center of gravity for making, growing, and working in Bloomington and greater Indiana.

A space to make, grow, and work

The Mill is a place to grow and keep talent in Bloomington. Our vibrant community supports remote workers, entrepreneurs, and creatives alike – whatever you’re working on, you can find talented likeminded peers at The Mill. Our unique community of freelancers, copywriters, attorneys, software and AI developers, graphic designers, nonprofit workers, creatives and creators of all types is the beating heart of The Mill. It’s the reason why we have our coworking space at the center of our facility. None of what we do is possible without people or our community.
